"Great Gallery"

The Great Gallery is found in Horseshoe Canyon, a detached part of Canyonlands National Park in Utah. The Gallery is an outstanding example of Barrier Canyon Style pictographs (painted rock art). The full panel is 200 feet long, 15 feet high and the paintings are life-sized (and above) human figures, the largest about 7 feet tall. The age of the panels remains indeterminate, generally estimated to be 2,000 and 4,000 years old. The large, ghostly figures are painted in monochrome reds and browns, with no appendages; most have highly decorated torsos with a great variety of patterns. They are accompanied by animals, birds, and tiny human figures. (Two detail images can be found in the "Echoes of the Ancients" gallery.) It is difficult to convey the the solemnity and weight of the Gallery, as the cliff in which it is painted towers over the viewer.

There is a story about our trek to the Gallery, and a video of the Gallery and its surroundings here.
